The fantasy world is also richly imagined, and the plot interesting. There’s even a part where someone has to explain timbits! I just thought it was a nice touch, and it helped me connect to the story a little bit more. As a Canadian myself, and as someone quite familiar with the city of Toronto, it was cool to be able to recognize little details about the environment. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever read a fantasy book set in Canada before, and it was so refreshing. I don’t think American readers realize just how exhausting it is to have every book set in the States. ![]() I’ll admit that the main thing that drew me to this book was the setting. NetGalley kindly provided me with an advanced copy of this book ahead of its February 23rd release, in exchange for an honest and spoiler-free review. ![]() Throw in an entirely queer cast of characters and set it in Toronto, Ontario – only a few hours away from where I grew up – and I was completely sold. An urban fantasy billed as “ City of Bones meets The Cruel Prince” sounds just up my alley. When I was putting together my list of most anticipated 2021 releases at the end of last year, A Dark and Hollow Star immediately jumped out to me as one to keep an eye on. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() They all seem rather the same, specifically their short tempers. For example, a border that resembles a color test pattern runs down the outer edges of a spread of nearly 40 carefully placed "colorful" examples, set against a white background, which dazzle the eye. Heck, every time I read a bad book, I learn something. I feel like every time I read a good book it influences me. What book or author has most influenced you as a writer or in general? It’s much harder than you’d think! In the end, I think we found some winners for the second and third books- No Easy Way Out and No Dawn Without Darkness. I spent days trying to come up with catchy four-word titles beginning with “ No” that were vaguely aphoristic. Of course then we faced the problem of having to come up with titles for the other two books in the series that would match. We gave up on mall and, after many other attempts, finally struck title gold with No Safety in Numbers. We tried innumerable combinations of words with Mall ( Dead Mall, Mall of Death, etc.), all of which just sounded like B-movie titles. My editor and I bandied about a bunch of different titles trying to hit on exactly the right one.
